Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a Bear?
A: Typically, a bear is a gay male who does not fit into the stereotypical gay male body type of thin, hairless and androgynous. While there is no definitive physical characteristic that defines a bear, typical attributes include facial hair, body hair and bodies of various sizes and shapes. Generally, if you believe you’re a bear then you are a bear! There’s room for everyone.
Q: What is a Bear Run?
A: Bear Runs are organized yearly social events that allow bears and their admirers an opportunity to gather in a city and take part in multiple events ranging from camping, shopping, eating, partying and many others depending on the hosting city. The majority of bear runs are organized by a city’s bear club and the proceeds benefit local charities connected to the LGBTQ community.
Q: Do I have to be a bear to come to a bear run?
A: Not at all! Our only requirements are that you are 21 years of age or older and self identify as male. While there will be some events during the weekend that women can attend the bear run itself caters to those who identify as male. Bears come in all shapes and sizes as well as those who admire them.
Q: What bear club will put on Bear Crossing?
A: The Kansas City Bear Mafia, a 501c3 non-profit organization, are the organizers and hosts of the event. The Bear Mafia was started in late 2009 as a social group that has grown into an organization of bears giving back to the community and also finding new ways to bring bears together for fun and friendship.
Q: How can I attend Bear Crossing?
A: The best way is to register for a full run pass. The run pass will give you access to all the weekend’s events plus transportation from our host hotel and back again. At the door entry may be available for some events but there’s no guarantees if we are at capacity. Priority will be given to those who have purchased a full run pass. We do anticipate selling out the hotel this year so some events may be limited to only those who have purchased a run pass. So be sure to register early and book a hotel room as soon as possible!
